Lesson 2 of 7

Established science

Neutrons

No charge, also in the nucleus

A neutron also lives in the nucleus. Charge 0. Mass about the same as a proton. Add neutrons and the atom gets heavier — but it is still the same element.

Six protons means this stays carbon. With 6 neutrons it is Carbon-12. Mass number A = protons + neutrons.

Check

If you add a neutron to carbon, what happens?
