Lesson 3 of 7

Established science

Electrons

Negative charge, outside the nucleus

Electrons are much lighter. Charge −1. They occupy shells around the nucleus. In a teaching picture (the Bohr model) shell 1 holds 2, shell 2 holds 8.

Neutral atoms have electrons = protons. Remove electrons and the atom is a positive ion. Add extras and it is negative. Bonds are made with these outer electrons.
